ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY SPECIALIST I/II

The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist (EH&S) will provide technical support, advice, and coordinate the implementation of environmental, health and safety programs and regulatory requirements in support of business unit and district wide operations. Entry Level (EH&S I) and Journey level (EH&S II) positions provide these support functions.
SALARY RANGE:
EH&S I: $63,276 - $79,020 Annually
EH&S II: $75,192 - $93,900 Annually

Duties include but are not limited to: Planning and coordinating with business unit personnel, implementation of programs to identify and reduce EH&S risk, as well as, comply with regulatory and policy requirements; reviewing work practices, hazard analyses, statistical data, accident and inspection reports, and other information to identify trends and/or weaknesses where improvement is needed; conducting field visits, job hazard analyses, and audits to identify exposures to hazards, assess effectiveness of controls, reinforcement safe work practices, and provide recommendations for improvement; assisting in development of strategic plan and initiatives to support business unit operations; recommending policies, procedures, rules, and safe work practices dealing with all aspects of safety, health, accident prevention, and industrial hygiene; managing safety training program for business unit personnel; investigating employee accidents and unsafe working conditions; managing solicitation process and supervise contractors performing safety, health and/or environmental work in support of district operations; representing the District to regulatory agencies and public and private organizations and serve as liaison with District management, employees, and the public relative to safety, occupational health and/or environmental regulatory compliance issues.
In addition to the above, the EH&S II may oversee, and reviews work of EH&S I specialist, safety reps, or line staff including coordinating field work, report preparation and studies, reviewing work products and practices, providing guidance and feedback to subordinate staff; and act on the supervisor’s behalf in his/her absence.
Job Requirements:
EH&S I: 1 to 3 years of progressively responsible relevant work experience as an “Environmental, Health & Safety Specialist (or equivalent position). EH&S II: 3 to 5 years of progressively responsible relevant work experience as an “Environmental, Health & Safety specialist (or equivalent position), or in some other capacity such as a journey electric utility worker with specific experience in safety or occupational health programs. With knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures related to Environmental Safety and Health management; Operations related to distribution of electricity, including but not limited to best practices and procedures for the electric utility industry. In-depth knowledge of regulatory processes related to safety, health, and environmental issues at the federal, state and local levels.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university majoring in Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Toxicology, Engineering or related field and/or certification as journey lineworker or electrician is desired. The ability to obtain and maintain one or more of the following: licensed as Professional Engineer, certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified industrial Hygienist (CIH), or a Certified Utility Safety Administrator is also desired.
